Abstract
The motion of a collisionless plasma, a high-temperature, low-density, ionized gas, is described by the Vlasov-Maxwell equations. In the presence of large velocities, relativistic corrections are meaningful, and when magnetic effects are neglected this formally becomes the relativistic Vlasov-Poisson system. Similarly, if one takes the classical limit as the speed of light tends to inο¬nity, one obtains the classical Vlasov-Poisson system. We study the long-time dynamics of these systems of PDE and contrast the behavior when considering the cases of classical versus relativistic velocities and the monocharged (i.e., single species of ion) versus neutral plasma situations.
