Natural Resource Management - An Ecologist's Perspective
- đ¤ Speaker: Dr. Martyn Murray, MGM Environmental Solutions / University of Edinburgh
- đ Date & Time: Friday 29 October 2010, 13:00 - 14:00
- đ Venue: Part II Lecture Theatre, Department of Zoology , Downing Street, CB2 3EJ
Abstract
It will be argued that neither the Tragedy of the Commons nor the Theory of Wildlife Harvesting provide an adequate explanation of natural resources management. They cannot address the foremost predicaments of our age – how to harvest resources without impoverishing the biosphere and how to share resources without dividing society â because they do not incorporate the core underlying process of resource competition. In this talk I will briefly outline some recent developments in ecological competition theory and then show how they can be used to justify a simple planning framework for sustainable and equitable development of natural resources.
