Functional Simulation in a Neural Theory of Language

For over two decades, the Neural Theory of Language (NTL) group at ICSI /UC Berkeley has been developing a unified theory of language acquisition and use.The methodology involves implementing systems that both perform functionally and are consistent with experimental findings at all levels.

The theory has matured to the point where new challenges most often fit existing structures. The talk will introduce the ECG (Embodied Construction Grammar) formalism and the related concepts of simulation semantics and best-fit analysis. I will discuss how these mechanisms account for phenomena such as compositionality, public meaning, garden pathing and grammar learning. The audience will be invited to suggest additional challenges.
