Abstract
The fifth William Pitt seminar, Geopolitics: crisis and change, will be held in the Queen’s Building, Emmanuel College, at 4 pm on Friday 15 October 2010, followed at 8 pm by dinner in Pembroke. The seminar will be chaired by Mr James Naughtie, the well-known broadcaster, and will cover the following three areas/topics:
- Historical: how the world has arrived at its current political state
- Failure to deal on a European scale with major problems as they emerge
- The shift of power and influence from West to East, focussing on emerging economies
The speakers will be:
- Mr Robert Cooper, Director-General for External and Politico-Military Affairs at the General Secretariat of the Council of the European Union
- Hon. Alexander Downer, formerly Australian Foreign Minister who will give a ‘Pacific Rim’ view
- Dr Stefan Halper, University of Cambridge, former US Presidential Advisor, whose research interests remain centred on US foreign and national security issues and international security matters.
- Professor Brendan Simms, University of Cambridge, Professor in the History of International Relations, who will provide a historical perspective
