Observations of the innermost regions around accreting black holes

Abstract
X-ray spectra and variability of accreting black holes show signatures of matter just a few gravitational radii from the event horizon. The spectral signatures, particularly a broad iron emission line, will be discussed and illustrated with data from objects of mass ranging from 10 to 10 million Solar masses. Variability, including reverberation of the X-ray emission from the accretion flow, will be presented.
