Abstract

Can we fly without costing the earth? Trends show that more people are flying more, and for this to be sustainable, the aerospace industry must develop cleaner, quieter planes. In this talk, I will show that this challenge rests firmly on the shoulders of the materials science and engineering community. In order to deliver more efficient aircraft, current alloys must be optimised and new materials systems must be developed. In response, materials scientists, physicists and engineers need to develop a deep understanding of many of the complex interactions that occur in commercial alloys. This talk will show how the scientific community is responding to this challenge.

John Aveson is currently based in the Rolls-Royce University Technology Centre in the Department of Materials Science & Metallurgy. His research focuses on the processing of both conventional and novel materials for aerospace. He graduated in 2009 with an MEng in Materials Science from the University of Oxford.
