Plastic Fantastic: Organic Solar Cells as a Large-Scale Renewable Energy Source

Over the past two decades organic (i.e. carbon-based) semiconductors have gone from a laboratory curiosity to the dominant technology for high-end smartphone displays. More recent research has studied their suitability as photovoltaic cells, exploiting the exquisite molecular control granted by organic chemical synthesis, and the large-scale fabrication made possible by solution-processable polymers. I will try to give an overview of the field, and explain the role of my work, which uses ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy to study materials that can make better use of higher-energy (i.e. blue) light by generating multiple electrons for every absorbed photon.
