Subsistence and changing culture: new approaches to Chinese prehistory

Abstract
The last two decades have seen a dramatic increase in the number of scientific investigations within Chinese archaeology. The light cast by these new methodologies have strengthened our understanding of Chinese prehistory both in theory and in practice. This talk considers the construction of the Neolithic in relation to diachronic changes in subsistence practice. Three key factors will be discussed in turn: the beginning of millet domestication in northern Eurasia; cultural changes in relation to food production and consumption in prehistory; and, the globalisation of starchy crops in late prehistory.
