Abstract
The directed propulsion of small scale objects in water is problematic because of the combination of low Reynolds number and strong thermal fluctuations at these length scales. I introduce simple prototypes of model low Reynolds number swimmers and examine their physical properties with and without fluctuations. I also report on a number of recent experimental realizations of such devices. Finally, I discuss the collective behavior of an array of model microfluidic pumps, and examine dynamical phenomena such as synchronization and (low Reynolds number) turbulent mixing, with and without fluctuations.
