Abstract
What makes soldiers fight? How to they overcome their most primordial fears to close with and kill the enemy? How do they sustain their will and cohesion to carry on doing this day after day? Lt Col Holt of the Royal Marines explores these questions from the perspective of a tactical commander who has served twice in Iraq and twice in Afghanistan. He also took part in one of the most daring and successful Commando raids in the history of modern warfare – Operation Houghton – the seizure of key Iraqi oil installations before the 2003 invasion.
