Abstract
Filipp Maliavin was part of the diaspora of Russian artists who emigrated to France after the Revolution, but unlike the majority of his contemporaries, he continued to solely produce paintings of the Russian peasant life of his youth, without exploring new ideas and subject matter. This paper will consider the case of Maliavin’s large-scale painting of a troika of 1933 which not only provided a fresh approach to an image ingrained within Russian visual culture but also depicted a peasant lifestyle, which, by then, had been destroyed by Stalin’s forced collectivisation.
