Abstract
Size effects are important as results from small coupons are often used as the basis for design of large structures. Strength of carbon fibre composites tends to decrease with specimen size, and failure to account properly for this effect could lead to non-conservative designs. Results will be presented of an experimental programme to investigate the effect of specimen size on the tensile strength and failure mechanisms of unnotched and notched carbon fibre laminates. Finite element analysis using cohesive zone interface elements is able to represent the experimentally observed damage development, and gives excellent predictions for scaling effects on notched strength over a wide range of different laminates and sizes
