Steps Towards a Flexible Manycore Fabric

Abstract
The multicore approach is seen by many as a silver bullet to the problems of scaling uniprocessor performance. In practice we believe that the limits imposed by Amdahl’s law, complexity (hardware and software), reliability and power consumption suggest that this is not the case. Paradoxically, perhaps, our solution is to employ a greater number (500-5000) of processors to overcome these limits. This talk will describe the design space we are exploring in the Loki project.
Each member of the project will say a few words about one or two elements of the architecture or compiler that they are currently investigating. Future talks will report in more detail on particular experimental results.
