Thorium Fuelled Accelerator Driven Subcritical Reactors: The Future of Nuclear Power?
- đ¤ Speaker: Geoff Parks (University of Cambridge)
- đ Date & Time: Wednesday 09 March 2011, 21:00 - 22:00
- đ Venue: Nihon Room, Pembroke College
Abstract
Current nuclear reactors use uranium and plutonium created from uranium as their fuel. Although the technology demonstrably works, it is not without its downsides: concerns about safety, nuclear proliferation and the nature of the waste produced. This talk will explore an alternative nuclear technology that uses thorium rather than uranium and discuss its advantages and its challenges.
Geoff Parks received his BA in Engineering from Cambridge University in 1984 and his PhD in Nuclear Engineering in 1989. He became a University Lecturer at the start of 1996 and is now a Senior Lecturer.
Series This talk is part of the Stokes Society, Pembroke College series.
