Abstract
Nature does a lot for us humans, much of which we take for granted, but for how much longer. Economists and ecologists are combining forces to encourage us to put a value on ‘ecosystem services’, as they are known in the trade. There are various methods espoused for assigning monetary values to these, and such values may carry most political weight. However, many people feel this fails to do justice to the type of value nature has for us. The assumptions behind the economics can be questioned and have political dimensions. Some values, eg spiritual ones, are presumably beyond price. How should environmentalists handle this valuable territory?
