Is there a role for sRNAs in C4 Photosynthesis?

The C4 photosynthetic cycle represents a series of biochemical and anatomical modifications to concentrate CO2 in a specially modified vascular bundle sheath to decrease the rates of RuBP oxygenation by RuBisCO. Targeted gene expression to specific cell types is required if this cycle is to operate with any efficiency, although these mechanisms are not well understood. A potential role for small RNA -mediated regulation has been explored through direct small RNA profiling combined with inhibition studies in the model C4 species Cleome gynandra.
