Abstract
ABSTRACT
Nick talks about how Tesco went back to basics to understand its customers and how they might have a more enjoyable, useful and time-saving shopping trip through use of digital retail on their mobile, TV, etc – rather than having an ‘app’ just for the sake of it, or not going in an ‘app’ direction at all.
Organisational changes occurred as a result of the behavioural change that was undertaken which in turn resulted in open innovation and the use of third parties and a developer community to “build stuff for customers”.
About the Speaker:
Nick Lansley is one of the most innovative thinkers in the area of web and mobile applications for retail. As one of the originators of Tesco.com, he first built web and downloadable applications to enable wine and grocery home shopping on slow modem internet connections, the first of which was launched 1996 apened opened by Tesco’s Tim Mason and Bill Gates.
He then managed grocery web development through to 2000, when he took on his current research role to help to deliver a service better for customers – work that continues apace to this day.
He was recently appointed an inaugural member of the UK’s Mobile Commerce Joint Industry Committee (MCJIC), an industry initiative established to ensure that businesses are prepared for the opportunities and challenges that accompany the explosive growth in mobile commerce. In May 2010 Wired UK voted him #35 in the “The Wired 100” – Britain’s top digital power-brokers.
