Abstract
Many philosophers (and very many cognitive scientists) think of mental states as purely physical phenomena. This thesis in metaphysics implies that the physical determines the mental. According to a priori physicalism, the determination is a priori. How then can we explain why Mary fails to know what it is like to see red? I give the representationalist’s answer to this question.
