Falling clouds and jets of particles

Abstract
Clouds and jets of particles settling under the action of gravity in an otherwise pure liquid are investigated both experimentally and numerically. These two particulate systems can be unstable even in the complete absence of inertia. A cloud of particles slowly evolves into a torus which breaks up into secondary droplets which deform into tori themselves in a repeating cascade while a jet of particles develops varicose modulation of its diameter at low volume fractions. The discrete nature of the particles is fundamental in the understanding of these instabilities.
