Abstract
Early blindness is a dramatic example of cortical plasticity which results in a wide-ranging set of changes that include changes in synaptic connectivity, wide-scale changes in the functional response properties of occipital cortex, and improved processing of auditory and tactile information. I will discuss how recent work done by our laboratory and others is moving us towards an integrated understanding of the neuroanatomical and behavioral effects of human blindness.
