Abstract
Michael Wright Halley VI Lead Structural Engineer and Design Project Manager, AECOM
The current station at Halley is on a floating ice shelf with an increased risk that it will break off as a giant iceberg. So the race is on to design and the build a new station on the right side of the calving line.
The British Antarctic Survey (BAS), launched an architectural competition in June 2004 to select a design for the new station that must be able to lift itself out of the one metre of snow accumulation that occurs each year, and have the ability to relocate during its life.
That is the challenge. BAS thought the best way to understand conditions there was to send one of the design team to experience this remarkable continent at first hand. This is the subject of my talk â the design competition, the trip to Antarctica and the winning design.
