Abstract
During my working life there have been amazing advances in the welding of steel and aluminium, and in the design procedures to improve the safety and reliability of welded structures. Most have been driven by large capital projects funded by multinational companies or by Governments and their Agencies. Some of the most important innovations and milestones will be discussed as seen from the UK and TWI âs unique central position in worldwide developments.
What are the lessons from this history which can help future developments? The talk will discuss these, covering factors which encourage creative and innovative thinking, the beneficial effect of competition at all levels, and the importance of the right funding sources to bring new ideas to the market place.
——A joint meeting with the Eastern Counties branch of the Welding and Joining Society——
