' Making secondary school practical work more effective: Lessons to be learnt from primary school teachers
- 👤 Speaker: Dr Ian Abrahams
- 📅 Date & Time: Monday 04 July 2011, 17:00 - 18:30
- 📍 Venue: GS4, Donald McIntyre Building, Faculty of Education, 184 Hills Road, Cambridge
Abstract
The seminar will draw on recent research, including the just completed evaluation of the Getting Practical: Improving Practical Work in Science (IPWiS) project, that found that much of what currently takes place in secondary school practical lessons can be characterised as being essentially ‘hands-on’ but ‘minds-off’. It will also discuss the interesting (and unexpected) IPWiS evaluation finding that teachers of primary science are more effective in getting learners to think about, and use, scientific words and ideas in practical lessons than their secondary colleagues and the important role that empathy appears to play in this and what secondary teachers might learn from this.
