Abstract

Wireless communication is having a major impact on poverty in India. Mobile phones are being used by poor people for mobile banking, to engage in markets, find jobs and access health and education services.

In this seminar, we will hear from experts in mobile communications and development in India:

• Mr M Swaminathan, Senior Vice-President from Reliance Communications Ltd, the largest mobile provider in India.
• Mr Shiv Kumar Narayan from Catalyst Management Services, a leading development consultancy company in Bangalore.  

In the seminar, the speakers will:

• Outline the main lessons learned in using wireless communication to promote economic development and poverty reduction in India
• Identify key technical, business and social challenges to scaling up these efforts;
• Facilitate an interactive session with participants to discuss how these problems can be tackled.

  Delegates are welcome to arrive from 6.00pm for refreshments before the seminar starts at 6.30pm. After the seminar there will be a drinks reception with the opportunity for networking. Follow-up meetings will be held at the Judge Business School on 30^th July to explore possible partnerships between companies, social enterprises and individuals in Cambridge and Bangalore to respond to these challenges.
