Abstract
If the economy is to be decarbonised in the next decade or so, new technologies, in particular new energy technologies, will play a key part in reducing emissions. Much of the analysis of the emergence and implementation of new energy technologies is based upon a substitution of one existing technology for that of another based upon cost. This presentation will attempt to demonstrate that such analysis is based upon a misunderstanding about how technologies are diffused. Instead, the presentation will illustrate how the diffusion process has occurred in a range of case studies and how designing and applying a policy framework that supports such diffusion would be a more effective approach to rapidly decarbonising the economy.
