Clay: the forgotten particle in submarine sediment density flows

Abstract
Submarine sediment density flows e.g. turbidity currents and debris flows, can transport sediment thousands of kilometres from the continental shelf to the deep sea. The deposits of these flows demonstrate that they commonly contain large amounts of clay. However, most experiments that aim to model these flows do not contain cohesive particles. I will present experiments conducted in an annular flume using mixed flows of sand, clay and water. These experiments demonstrate the profound influence of small changes in clay content on flow rheology and deposit morphology.
