Abstract
In 1972 Olโga Korbutโs Olympic debut made headlines around the world. However, her performances provoked very different reactions in the USSR and in the West. In this paper Lucy considers media coverage of Korbut and other Soviet sportswomen in the context of national ideologies, international political tensions, and continuing debates about the role of women in society.
