The fundamental unit of life is the cell, a self-replicating machine which performs every function of a living being: motility, growth, reproduction, metabolism, and adaptation. The goal of cell biology is to understand the tiny components that comprise these machines, and how they work together to perform vital tasks. Charged with our task of reverse-engineering the building blocks of life, biologists have developed an array of imaginative techniques to dissect the molecular components inside our cells. After this talk, you’ll never think of bread, beer or bugs the same way again!
