Abstract
Throughout history, mankind has strove to understand numbers, both as a basic tool for engineering and technology, and as an intellectual challenge to explain the hidden and mysterious properties of arithmetic suggested by the study of numerical examples. The lecture will be non-technical, and will survey a few of the most influential discoveries about numbers, from the Babylonians to the present day. It will also briefly give a non-technical explanation of what are arguably the oldest and the newest major open problems about numbers.
