Abstract
The Chinese leadership has committed itself to building a comprehensive and equitable social security system by 2020. In recent years, it has also taken significant steps to fill gaps in the social security net by establishing health insurance, and pension schemes for the rural and uncovered sections of the urban population. This paper will present an overview of the current social security system, the plans for its development, the fault lines it suffers from and the reforms needed to establish a comprehensive and equitable social security system.
