Abstract
Samuel Messick, one of the godfathers of modern validity theory, claimed that the evaluation of consequences is fundamental to validity. Whether consequences should be in, or out, of validity theory has been controversial ever since. This session will explore arguments for and against the integration of ‘consequences’ alongside similar debates regarding reliability, fairness, social policy and the law. Participants will be encouraged to identify appropriate boundaries for the concept of validity.
