Community characteristics and their effects on the structure and survival of a deep-sea fish community

Abstract
Many species exist together, allowing high levels of biodiversity and efficiently functioning communities. Ecological dynamics on communities, such as stochasticity and density dependance, affect the trophic and social interactions between species and thus affect outcomes of species persistence, community biodiversity and functioning. The other major influence on these interactions will be the characteristics of the species.
A computer model is used to track the effects of stochasticity and density dependance on a Scottish deep-sea fish community using real species traits. Results highlight the importance of using characteristics in modelling accurate community reactions to changing ecological situations.
