Abstract
The income distribution of industrialised countries became less unequal during the 20th century as a result of trade union power and government intervention. The globalisation of markets and the fragmentation of production have undermined this. Attention is turning to the concern that large corporations have to maintain good reputations with consumers. Increasingly it is this, rather than direct pressure from governments or trade unions, that offers the best chance of upholding decent labour standards. How is this being exploited?
