Abstract
I will discuss a path-integral representation of the recently introduced class of continuous matrix product states (cMPS) for 1-D quantum fields, and explain how this reformulation allows a consistent generalization of the class to arbitrary dimensions. The physical states are found to arise through a continuous measurement process by a lower dimensional auxiliary field, that has Lorentz symmetry and is necessarily fermionic. The resultant physical states naturally obey entropy area laws, and the expectation values of observables are determined by the dissipative dynamics of the boundary field. The class provides powerful analytical and computational tools to describe the physics of strongly interacting field systems in two and higher spatial dimensions.
