Abstract
Conventional silicon based photovoltaic solar panels typically convert sunlight to electricity with efficiencies up to 20%, yet the thermodynamic limit for solar energy conversion sits at 87%. The physical reasons behind the relatively low power conversion efficiency of most solar cells will be presented together with an insight into the possible routes to demonstrate highly efficient solar cells that can approach the thermodynamic limit.
