The classical subfield of complex analysis known as geometric function theory has experienced a recent vogue in the last 10 years, in no small part due to the success of Schramm’s SLE processes. However, it seems that the theory of conformal mappings (other than the occasional Moebius map) do not usually feature prominently in graduate courses.

In my talk, I plan to give a rather informal overview of some aspects of geometric function theory, with a bias towards my own interests. The idea will be to convince you that conformal maps have rather interesting and unexpected properties, and that they can be quite useful.
