Abstract
Questions have long been asked concerning children and sex education: What do they know, what do they need to know, how best to teach them, who should teach them and how does the advent of HIV and AIDS change some of these answers? This book is a summary of a study of children’s sexual knowledge and its interaction with formal schooling and the community. The enquiry was undertaken in three Africa countries, Kenya, Tanzania and South Africa. It involved using photovoice, video and interviews with young people in primary schools.
Colleen McLaughlin is Deputy Head of Faculty and Director of International Initiatives. She and the team are now working on the next phase of the ASKAIDS project and are researching the implciations in practice of the work reported in Old Enough to Know: Consulting Pupils about Sex and AIDS Education in Three African Countries. (2012) HSRC Press. Colleen McLaughlin, Sharlene Swartz, Susan Kiragu, Shelina Walli and Mussa Mohamed.
