18th C. French Military Schools: An ‘Enlightened’ Education'?

Abstract
The paper is a general historiographical overview of French military education in 18th century, looking at how the military education originated and developed across various branches in the army: infantry, artillery, cavalry and so on. It covers the way it was instituted in France, from the ideas for the court education of nobles in the late 16thcentury through to the nationwide projects for military education in the 18th century.
