The Poetry of Anne Stevenson: An Introduction

Abstract
The internationally acclaimed, American/British poet, Anne Stevenson (1933-present), has been described by Andrew Motion as ‘one of the most remarkable poetic voices to have emerged on either side of the Atlantic in the last fifty years.’ This talk will describe some of the main themes and major qualities pertaining to that voice; elaborate on the interplay between the imaginary and the real in her poetry; and illustrate the musicality and craftsmanship Stevenson demonstrates in her detailed depiction of the world about her. Copies of the poems to be discussed will be made available.
