Abstract
We consider model predictive control (MPC) schemes in which the stage cost is not necessarily related to a stabilization or tracking problem. In particular, it does not need to be sign definite and the minimum of the stage cost does not need to be an equilibrium of the controlled dynamics. We investigate whether MPC without terminal constraints is able to produce approximately infinite horizon optimal closed loop solutions and to reproduce the optimal trajectories. We show that – along with suitable regularity and dissipativity conditions – a so called turnpike property can be used in order to conclude such results and explain why exponential turnpike properties are particularly useful in this context. Motivated by this result, we present a sufficient condition for such an exponential turnpike property.
