Structural determinants and directed information transfer in self-organized critical neuronal networks

Abstract
Self-organized critical dynamics describe self-similar dynamics that spontaneously emerge in complex systems poised between order and randomness. Recent neurophysiological studies provide some empirical support for the presence of such dynamics in biological neuronal networks. I will describe neuronal-network modeling studies that 1) associate self-organized critical dynamics with realistic anatomical complex-network connectivity, and 2) associate critical dynamics with maximized directed information transfer, as inferred using a novel information-theoretical measure.
