The spin of an electron, or hole, in a quantum dot provides an optically controlled quantum memory. In this talk I will present our recent optical studies of individual InAs/GaAs self-assembled quantum dot molecules โ€“ two InAs dots separated by a thin GaAs tunneling barrier. When the energies of the individual charged dots are brought into resonance by an external electric field, the optical spectrum forms spectral patterns that reveal a great deal about the physics of these artificial molecules and enables optically controlled entanglement
