Capabilities, Schooling and Education: Addressing issues of equality and quality

Abstract
The aim of the second CAEN seminar is to explore the links between the capability approach and issues around quality and equality in school settings. The seminar aims to provide an informal and critical platform for dialogue on how we can think about schooling in terms of human capabilities. It will be organised as a combination of senior and early stage researchers’ presentations and a practical workshop.
The intellectual focus of the seminar:
The seminar will aim to provide a focused exploration of how the capability approach can assist in developing a deeper understanding of issues of social justice, quality and equality in education.
The workshop will aim to address the following questions:
1. How can the capability approach be applied to evaluate the impact of schooling on student life chances?
2. How do student capabilities increase and decrease informal education settings and what does this tell us about the quality of schooling?
3. How do the different layers of policy, leadership and teaching create capability friendly settings in a school?
4. How can the capability approach be applied to support concerns of equity and social justice in relation to the educational engagement of all children and young people, especially those at the greatest risks of exclusion?

The seminar is free of charge, but there are limited spaces available. Lunch and refreshments will be provided.
