IQ Gains in the 21st Century
- đ¤ Speaker: Prof Dr James Flynn, University of Otago, New Zealand

- đ Venue: Experimental Psychology Lecture Theatre
Abstract
Professor Flynn of the “Flynn Effect” will preview the most striking material in his new book, the successor to “What is Intelligence?” (2007).
The developing world is overtaking the developed world, both for mean IQ and economic progress. The “ice ages hypothesis” about the evolution of a racial hierarchy for IQ is refuted – as are recent attempts by Jensen and Rushton to evidence the genetic inferiority of American blacks. The current generation of women have matched men on Raven’s Progressive matrices.
Since 1950, there has been a disturbing tendency for adults to enhance their active vocabularies in a way they cannot transfer to their children by socialization. Finally, there is evidence of a “bright tax”: the brighter the person, the steeper the decline of analytic ability in old age.
