Codesign in action: the hardware and software architecture of Blue Gene/Q and its impact on scientific applications

Abstract
Blue Gene/Q is the third generation of a family of massively parallel supercomputers designed by IBM in collaboration with the US Department of Energy. It reflects a substantial effort in codesign: the hardware is designed to meet specific application needs and, in turn, applications are tuned to take advantage of its unique features.
This talk will describe the Blue Gene/Q hardware and software architecture, identifying the critical features for scalability and overal performance within a non-disruptive software environment. Techniques for optimizing libraries and scientific applications for this and other next-generation architectures will be given. Finally, a description of porting efforts and performance results for chemistry and material science applications will be provided, including LAMMPS , NAMD, NWChem, GPAW , QMCPACK and MADNESS .
