Abstract

Field geological mapping of British Antarctic Territory has been ongoing for the last 50-60 years, but over an area five times the size of the United Kingdom and with a relatively small number of geologists working during short summer seasons.

Teal Riley is a field geologist and head of the Geological Mapping Group at the British Antarctic Survey. He has worked for BAS since 1995 and has spent 11 summer seasons in the Antarctic mapping and interpreting the geology its long lived continental margin arc.

The presentation will discuss the practicalities of Antarctic fieldwork, the use of remote sensing data to support fieldwork and the geological history of the Antarctic Peninsula and its correlations with Gondwana and the Andean margin.
