Denis Weaire (TCM, Cavendish Laboratory 1966-70) will recall how he developed an interest in structure, first in the solid state and then in soft matter. Foams present a variety of structures, ordered and disordered. One of the most famous is the Weaire-Phelan foam, recently realised in the lab for the first time. Confined systems add a further rich range of possibilities. This has led us into the consideration of packings of hard spheres, particularly in a cylinder. The development of X-ray tomography ensures a lively future for the whole subject.
