Abstract

A talk by Andrew Fraser, Manager, Gasoline Powertrain Development, at Ford’s Dunton Technical Centre on the Ford 1.0 Ecoboost three-cylinder turbo engine.

The talk will first discuss some of the external pressures which are pushing manufacturers to develop downsized petrol engines, and how they compare with alternative petrol and Diesel engine technologies. It will then explain how Ford has developed the overall concept and key features of the Ecoboost engine range, before going on to look at some specific design and development aspects that are unique to the 1.0 litre version, which was winner of the International Engine of the Year 2012.

Andrew Fraser graduated with a BSc Hons in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Edinburgh in 1986. He worked for Ford focusing on petrol and Diesel powertrain development, working two years in Detroit and four years in Cologne. His current role is manager of the petrol engine calibration and development group at Dunton, a group of approximately 100 engineers developing engines of up to 2 litres capacity for deployment in Ford vehicles in Europe and worldwide. He is a Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and member of the AD board.
