Abstract
A characteristic feature of colloidal particles is their Brownian motion. An individual colloidal particle explores space with its mean-squared displacement increasing linearly with time. However, much more complex dynamics are displayed by interacting particles and particles in external fields. Since colloidal systems are governed by thermal energy, even small inter-particle interactions or modest external potentials can significantly modify their dynamics (and structure). I will briefly mention an effect of inter-particle interactions, but mainly discuss the dynamics of colloidal particles in external potentials. This will include the response of colloidal particles to different external potentials: gravity, mechanical forces (shear) and optical forces.
