Google’s mission, to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful, is simple, but it entails running a large number of very different applications and services from web search and advertising over video, geo and commerce to enterprise. All this is supported by a single underlying computing infrastructure, Google’s worldwide data centers. In this talk, I will try to give an overview over the software tools and strateies required to make efficient use of warehouse-scale computers, from Google File System and Bigtable over Mapreduce and FlumeJava to Dremel/BigQuery and AppEngine, with an emphasis on “big data” tools and cloud computing.
